Oscars Death Race: True Grit

Inspired by Tomato Nation and my own inner stupid overachieving pop culture glutton, I’m once again attempting to see all this year’s Oscar-nominated films before the ceremony. Here’s how it’s going so far.

This is going to sound like criticism, but it’s not: The strongest feeling I had upon leaving the theater where I sawTrue Grit was the desire to watch the original. I liked the movie — the Coen Brothers taking on western themes does it for me every time — and I’d watch it again in a heartbeat, but I didn’t feel as satisfied with it as I had expected, and I’m curious to find out whether a viewing of the John Wayne version will shed some light on that. I also wish I hadn’t had a hellish day at work before I left for the theater, without which the film’s long, pastoral breaks in action might have seemed poetic rather than sleep-inducing. But hey, with a looming deadline and a list like mine, I can’t afford to be picky. On to the next.
